We help underserved Kansas City youth turn creative talent into certifications, college credit, internships, and paid work, through a pipeline that starts in the classroom.
An official Avid Learning Partner, teaching the same Pro Tools certification track used by colleges and universities.

Kids in KC's urban core have the same creative talent as anyone else. What they rarely get is professional equipment, working mentors, or a clear line from what they love to a paycheck.
So too many give up on creative careers, or leave Kansas City to chase them. DISTRKCT IS Foundation exists to change that.
We inspire youth to create, innovate, and thrive through art, music, education, and workforce development, regardless of zip code or socio-economic status.
Prevention, diversion, and workforce development in one model, built in three stages.
A world-class curriculum on industry-leading technology. Students get hands-on multimedia production experience and earn professional certifications and college credit.
A safe, structured studio from 3 to 8 p.m. that supports academic success and gives youth a constructive place to be during the hours they're most at risk.
Students and alumni keep building through advanced training, internships, college credit, and entrepreneurial guidance, turning the skills they've earned into income.
Students train on professional gear with instructors who work in the industry. They build a portfolio, earn credentials that count, and learn how to get paid for what they make.
Record, mix, and produce music the way it's done in professional studios.
Plan, shoot, edit, and publish content that builds an audience and a brand.
Learn the camera, lighting, and editing skills clients pay for.
Explore the creative and technical side of the gaming industry.
As an official Avid Learning Partner, we teach Avid's own curriculum. Students earn Pro Tools 101 and 110 certifications, the same credentials colleges use, so they can start college at the 200 level.
Bring DISTRKCT IS to Your SchoolWhen students have a reason to show up, they do. Many tell us this program is the main reason they come to school.
Average attendance rose from 67% to 97% for students in our school programs.
Students in the program have improved their overall school performance.

"He gives me a male role model to look up to, because I don't really have that in my life."
"The best part is leaving school and coming here every day, having a family type of bond, and making music."
"I only stayed at my current school so I could attend Audio and Content Creation."

Jo is a Kansas City native, a graduate of Washington High School in KCK, and a multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated producer, songwriter, and engineer. Over 14 years in Los Angeles he worked with artists including Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Kendrick Lamar, Justin Bieber, and Big Sean.
In 2015 he came home to build what he never had growing up here: a real pathway into creative careers for Kansas City youth. In 2021 he founded DISTRKCT IS Foundation, now an official Avid Learning Partner, to bring that pathway to more students.
The foundation honors Jo's mother, a social worker and librarian who spent her life showing kids the value of hard work and education. We carry that forward.
